HISTORY

Just Know Coalition

Bainbridge Coalition for Youth and Parents

The Bainbridge Coalition for Youth and Parents (BCFYP) was born in the fall of 2003 to address risky behaviors among the youth in our community. For three years the Coalition existed exclusively as an informal association of concerned individuals and non-profit groups acting through a volunteer board of local activists and community leaders. In 2006 the organization attained 501c3 status and became known as the Just Know Coalition. It is still led by a volunteer board.

During 2006 we sponsored several events to address adolescent risky behavior:

Walk with the Dragon was a 5-session workshop designed to provide parents with communication skills to engage their adolescents on topics of risk and conflict.

The Senior Initiative gave high school seniors access to a nationally recognized health promotion website designed for college students. This interactive website engages students on key issues such as alcohol, tobacco, stress, nutrition, and STD’s.

Fashion Freestyle was a weekend conference that supported youth (14-18) in expressing their values and beliefs through creating their own fashions. Professional designers, performance artists, youth facilitators and community members came together to assist youth to design and create clothing and produce a community performance to display and discuss their creations.

We sponsored two events to encourage families to spend time together and play together:

Family Fun Day took place on a Saturday in July in a local park.

Family Fun Nights were sponsored by BCFYP and participating members, The Boys and Girls Club, Bainbridge Youth Services and The Parks and Recreation District. In November the mayor proclaimed the City’s commitment to supporting families through the Just Know Coalition’s Family Fun Night events.

We also sponsored our Third Annual Fall Forum entitled “CyberSpeak: Let’s Talk!” featuring keynote speaker Bobbie Eisenstock, Ph.D., nationally recognized expert in media literacy and the effects of the cyber culture on children, teens, and families.
